Our Mission Statement

At JSM Coaching, we seek to support player development through the implementation of high-quality training sessions, as well as tailored / detailed player profiles which players can use, both a guide, and as point of assessment.

With these two development tools, along with a player’s own determination and drive, we believe that players can, “Aspire to be the player they know they can be!” In support of this statement, we spend a great deal of time and effort into ensuring players walk away from each session, not only having learned something, but with excitement about what the future holds for them as a player.

Every session is planned out, thoroughly. From the suitability of the sessions, taking account of the number of participants, to the specific progressions and regressions required for challenge and success, all the way to individual interventions. We have it covered. Each session is designed with a specific purpose and focus in mind. We believe players can only develop with repetition and clarity of purpose.

To further illustrate our commitment, JSM Coaching will only work with UEFA Qualified Coaches. All our coaches currently hold or are working towards the UEFA C Qualification, and steps are already being made to progress further, through the UEFA B Qualification. JSM Coaches will never settle for good enough, when it comes to our own learning. We continue to seek knowledge, every day, for the betterment of our coaching, with the primary focus being the benefit of our players.

As well as development, JSM Coaching also takes a keen interest in the players’ environment. We believe that players improve far quicker when they feel safe and comfortable. An approach that allows for mistakes and trying something new without fear of criticism or reprisal. JSM Coaches constantly monitor the behaviour and attitude of players, with any concerns being discussed with the relevant parties.

At JSM Coaching, we see Football as a means of expression; you should be allowed to try something new to see if it works, balancing risk and reward into the equation. We are not about creating robots which conform to the same style and template as every other player. Every child is different, both in personality and playing style. Some idolise dribblers, others passers, there are so many different identities for players, and we will seek to strengthen not lessen this aspect of their play.

Last but not least... FUN! FUN! FUN! FUN!

We want children to engage with our sessions and coaches, to help create an upbeat atmosphere which contributes to their development as players. As a coach, there is no better feeling than watching a player improve, day by day, knowing you have played even a small role in that process. Knowing they enjoy the experience, are desperate to come back and do it all again, is an even greater feeling.

JSM Coaching is ever evolving, and we hope that you will be a part of this.

Coach Josh's Story
(This is not a success story)

In my younger days, I considered myself a very strong player. No matter the group, age, or expectation that was placed on me I was always able to stand out and perform to a high standard. For the longest time, things worked out along the lines I expected, with success being a constant companion. It was because of this success that opportunity knocked, from Harrow Borough, all the way to Brentford and Watford’s development programme.

It was only when I reached this level that I realised my own naivety.

Players my age were familiar with concepts and phrases that I had never even heard of before. The coaches were hammering in points I could never hope of understanding; it was like they were talking another language, and I was too scared to ask for clarification, for fear that such a thing would cast doubt on my suitability. Technically, I was of the level, physically, less so, but I realised then, that there was still so much of football I did not know about.

And the coaches saw it too, so it was no surprise when they informed me that I would be better placed looking elsewhere.

For a long time, I was directionless, disillusioned with the one thing in my life that I had a passion for: football.

I wanted nothing to do with it, sought opportunities outside of football, but even those failed to connect with me in any meaningful way. And so, I distanced myself from those ventures, and was, this time, genuinely bereft of ideas. With nowhere to go, no prospects in sight, things were looking bleak.

And that was when a chance encounter occurred, while perusing job opportunities. I saw a posting for a football coach, from John Cadden. At first, I ignored it, continued to scroll past, and yet, days later, I found myself thinking back to that offer. At the urging of family members, I got in contact with John, and it is thanks to him that I re-engaged with a part of my life I never realised I missed.

Had it been any other coach, I might have lost interest once again, but as I watched him interact with the kids, coaching key technical points in an easy-to-understand way, it made me understand something : That this was what I was meant to do. As a result, I became obsessed with coaching, taking as many courses / qualifications as I possibly could do, at the same time.

All those concepts I had previously heard of but had not understood, were now not only accessible but learned. I knew what they meant now. Many years too late for the player version of me, but not too late in my new role as a coach. It was then that I made a promise to myself: That any player that worked with me would have access to information I never had.

Information that could make a difference.
