JSM COACHING
FAQ
What is the youngest age a child can train with JSM Coaching?
At JSM Coaching, the youngest players that we are willing to work with, in a group setting at least, is 6 years old. There are plans to create a junior group, exclusive to those even younger, but at this time it has not yet been set up. Once our other groups are settled, we will look to implement these changes.
Why does JSM Coaching only run during term time, and not during holiday periods?
Currently, JSM Coaching staff have other commitments during Holiday periods and are therefore unable to host. However, later in 2026, JSM Coaching will look to host their own Holiday Camp. More information concerning this will be revealed in the coming months.
Can JSM Coaching support players to join teams at Grassroots, and Academy level?
Many of the players that attend JSM Coaching have been directed to join local grassroot teams, to challenge their skills in the Harrow Youth league system. JSM Coaching staff are part of a network with connections to many grassroot teams in the W7 area and, if prompted, will get in contact with these clubs to ascertain whether a team has space, as well as the details of their trial day/period.
When it comes to players joining academies, JSM Coaching also has connections to those in this field too. However, suitability will be left up to our contacts, with many requiring information, such as player position (As the club may only be open to certain positions), technical evaluation, the viewing of a highlight package of said player. JSM Coaching has previously sent players to trial days, where scouts from academies and professional clubs attend to observe potential options.
Are your Coaches DBS checked?
All Coaches that work with JSM Coaching are DBS checked and cleared.
Where does training take place?
JSM Coaching sessions take place in multiple locations, the playing surface is particularly dependent on seasons.
During the Spring and Summer, sessions will take place at local parks, with some venues having access to parking spaces, while others do not.

During the Autumn and Winter, sessions will take place at private facilities, with some venues having access to parking spaces, while others do not.
The private facilities have not yet been confirmed, at this time, but will be in the W7 area. Information concerning the private facility location will be revealed around August/September.
What will you teach my child?
At JSM Coaching, we look to support player development through structured, fun and yet challenging sessions. Many technical concepts for improvement will be discussed. Sessions will range from unopposed (To develop a player ‘s individual capabilities) to opposed (Challenging a player’s individual traits to fit into a team dynamic and helping a player to deal with adaptable situations).
Several technical attributes will be targeted, such as: Ball Mastery, Passing Execution in a combination state, Approach play to a Finish, and many more. Specific skills (I.e. our session focus) will be highlighted. Such techniques will be explained, demonstrated and mechanically shown, to ensure players recognise the exact success criteria state through multiple learning processes.
How do I start training my child for football?
The best advice any coach can give is this... let them play, let them have fun. Play can take place at any location: a local park, in their garden, at their school, or by bringing your child along to a JSM Coaching session. All they need is a ball and you may very well see their interest piqued.
At the beginning, allow the child to figure out things for themselves, without criticism or judgement. The best way for a child to gain interest is via support, cheer when they do well, celebrate with them when they score that imaginary goal. Once you are sure they find joy in football, consider bringing them to more structured training sessions. To develop their skills. We all start somewhere, the initial steps may be small, but, in time, players can come on leaps and bounds.
How do I get my child in shape for football?
Like previously mentioned, just get them playing at first. Allow them to set the standards and practice, within reason of course. As long as it is safe for you and the child, allow the child to dictate the terms of play, in their own childish way. Through physical activity, the child will be more used to moving around, striking the ball, running till exhaustion or before that point is even met.
Even as a child balance is required. Physical activity along with a balanced diet will go a long way to ensuring your child stays fit and healthy. But don’t overdo it. Overtraining is a real thing and can lead to not only exhaustion, but injury too. Make sure they drink plenty of water also, to rehydrate after exercise.
Another great way to get children active and fit is to familiarise them with as many sports as possible. Tennis, netball, basketball, cycling, swimming, are all fantastic activities that will make them fitter. And, you never know, one experience in another sport could be all it takes to make that child know, that is the sport for me. If so, support the child in their decision, even if you would prefer they took a different route.
Will JSM Coaching work with a girl’s only group?
In the future, whether near or far, JSM Coaching will look to introduce a girl’s only training group. Once our current groups are settled, steps will be taken to advertise for this group, and other groups.

What equipment
does my child need
to bring to attend a JSM Coaching session?
Suitable attire for the occasion is vital for a child to get the most out of training, including their safety and the safety of others. Appropriate footwear should be worn, depending on the surface. If playing on astroturf, a child will not be allowed to wear studs and should instead wear trainers or astroturf shoes. If a session is unopposed, shin pads will not be needed due to the lack of contact. However, should a session be opposed, then shin pads must be worn for their own protection. Regardless of session type, water must always be brought to keep children hydrated.
As for equipment such as footballs, goals, etc, none is required. We will bring the footballs, the cones, the goals, and more. All you need to bring is a positive attitude.
How many times a week should a child train for?
A child should train as many times as they wish. There will be weeks when a child will be desperate to play football at the park, and others where they would prefer to stay at home instead. Do your best to cater to their whims, if time allows, of course.
There is no set time for a child when it comes to activity, but you will often see signs of when they have had enough. Even if they play football for 5 minutes, get bored, and would prefer to play on the swings, that is still better than sitting around watching TV for hours on end.
Are you looking for a football training academy to partner with?
At JSM Coaching, we are always looking for means and routes to support our players and help them reach greater heights. Partners, whether academy or not, will always be considered with the thoughts of the player’s first and foremost, over personal gain. JSM Coaching was built with certain principles, which we believe must remain intact throughout every process. If we are to expect players to be held to a certain standard, then we must be also. Perhaps even more so.
